January is Glaucoma Awareness Month

January 22, 2018

According to the Glaucoma Research Foundation, nearly 3 million people in the United States currently have glaucoma. Glaucoma is also called, “the sneak thief of sight” since there are no symptoms, and once the vision is lost, it’s permanent. Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness, and is more prevalent among African American and Latino populations.

Help Raise Awareness

Over 3 million Americans, and over 60 million people worldwide have glaucoma, and experts estimate that over half of them don’t even know it. Combined with the ever-growing population, we could have an epidemic of blindness looming over us if we don’t raise awareness about glaucoma. Below you’ll find a few ways you can help raise awareness:

  • Talk to family and friends: the more you talk about glaucoma, the more people around you will talk. Let your family members know about the dangers of glaucoma, and if they’re over the age of 50, they should get an eye exam every year to have their eyes checked out.
  • Refer your friends to www.glaucoma.org: referring them to the official glaucoma website will allow them to find more information about glaucoma, and learn more about the disease.
  • Get involved: there’s a lot you can do within your community to get involved and spread the word about glaucoma. Look for fundraisers, information sessions, group discussions, and invite expert speakers to your community to spread awareness of the disease.

Why are eye exams so important?

According to the World Health Organization, glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the world. In the most common form, there are no symptoms, and the loss of vision will start with peripheral vision, which is why an individual can go so long without noticing vision loss. The best way to protect your eyesight is to get a comprehensive eye examination at least once a year, that way if you have glaucoma, you can start treatment as soon as it’s detected.
